Hummer Drivers Get More Tickets. A Lot More.
If there’s one post on my blog that has received the most attention, it’s my Why Hummers Suck post. Not only did I get tons of comments but I also got the attention of the Club Hummer Off Road website. In the end, I learned that not everyone who drives a Hummer is a bad guy. Just because a bunch of them act like jackasses doesn’t mean that everyone who drives a Hummer is one.
Based a recent comment, I’m going to reiterate one point before continuing on: Regardless of how you feel about anyone who drives a Hummer, none of them deserve to have their property keyed, kicked and/or damaged. Feel free to express how you feel, give them the finger, call them names if you’d like, but don’t damage their property out of spite. That’s just stupid and ignorant.
Recently, I read a Wired article that revealed a very surprising statistic: Hummer drivers get more tickets than your average driver…nearly 5 times more! Based on survey data of approximately 1.7 million drivers, the Quality Planning Corp. found that drivers of the Hummer H2 and H3 get 4.63 times more traffic tickets than the average driver. Raj Bhat, president of Quality Planning, had this to say about the results:
The sense of power that Hummer drivers derive from their vehicle may be directly correlated with the number of violations they incur, or perhaps Hummer drivers, by virtue of their driving position, are less likely to notice road hazards, signs, pedestrians and other drivers.
So either they can’t drive worth a damn because of the size of their vehicle? Or is it because all Hummer drivers are just jerks? The stigma it seems is that all Hummer drivers think they are kings of the road and, as such, normal rules just don’t apply to them. Would that explain the results of this study? Maybe. Maybe not.
What is really odd is that, according to the study, drivers of the Chevy Tahoe, which is what the Hummer is based on, are least likely to get tickets. This suggests that the trend doesn’t necessarily apply to most SUV drivers…just Hummer drivers.
Now, does that mean that we can draw the conclusion that all Hummer drivers are assholes? No, it doesn’t. All this says is that out of all the folks getting ticketed, Hummer drivers happen to be the biggest offenders. However, it does make me wonder: What does this say about the average Hummer owner’s driving habits? I’ll leave you, the reader, the opportunity to draw your own conclusions.
