Who am I?

Jeff WhitfieldWhat happens when you unleash a frustrated musician onto a computer? You get a really big geek! That’s me in a nutshell.

What used to be just a simple hobby turned into a great shift in my career. Although I majored in audio and video production, my love for computers grew and grew to the point where a change was destined to occur. Beginning in 2001, I have held positions within the IT industry from IT Assistant to IT Supervisor. But my real calling was web development.

Since 2005, I’ve been contributing to an open-source content management framework called MODX. This led to my eventual employment with Collabpad, a small web development company that is comprised of the core founders of the MODX project. Eventually, MODX became a company and Collabpad was put in moratorium.

In late 2011, I decided to branch out and try something new. I am now an independent web developer contracting out jobs that entail cutting edge technologies and techniques such as responsive design, mobile frameworks (ie. jQuery Mobile, Sencha Touch, etc.), and HTML5/CSS3.  Lots of exciting things are happening in the web development/design community!

Over the years I have developed a philosophy that dictates that “less is more” and that “good enough” simply isn’t good enough. Good design is as much about communicating with your audience as it is about aesthetics. As such, I felt it best that the products and solutions I use on a daily basis reflect this philosophy.

I’ve since abandoned Microsoft Windows and am now using the Mac OS as my primary operating system with a Linux box acting as a development server. I also own an iPhone, which I think is the absolute best phone I’ve ever used. I’m a big proponent for open-source software and a firm believer in web standards.

There are many other parts of me that reek of geek. I’m a big comic book reader and collector. I love to drive my Volkswagen New Beetle and wipe it down now and then with a diaper. I love all kinds of movies but tend to gravitate towards the really geeky ones (Star Wars, The Matrix, just about any comic book movie, etc.). I love all kinds of music and play a bit of music myself (the ex-musician in me can’t resist!). And, of course, a geek can’t do without a stack of books to read: everything from books on PHP, CSS, Javascript, and other web development and design related geeky stuff, to my weekly stack of comics, to a myriad of graphic novels like Y: The Last Man and Cerebus, to David Allen’s Getting Things Done, to J. Craig Venter’s A Life Decoded, to Mark Evanier’s awesome biography, Kirby: King of Comics.

My wife, Sarah, whom I married in December of 2005, knew she was marrying a geek. She knew what she was getting into and has managed to survive the geekiness that surrounds our home. She loves me and supports me in whatever I do and that’s good enough for me.

Yeah, I’m a geek. So what?
